From Pews To Pints: The Divine Transformation of An Old Church Into A Craft Brewery.

In the heart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a unique and captivating destination awaits your discovery. Nestled within the city’s historic fabric, the Church Brew Works, a craft brewery and restaurant, stands as a testament to both history and innovation. As you step through its doors, you immediately enter an atmosphere that marries the past with the present, creating an experience that’s nothing short of remarkable.

The story of Church Brew Works dates back to a pivotal moment in 1993, specifically on the 6th of August, when the church found itself under the act of suppression by the Bishop of Pittsburgh. The once vibrant St. John Church was plunged into silence, its pews empty and its halls echoing with a dormant history. However, the spirit of resilience prevailed, and in early 1996, the wheels of transformation were set in motion.

Almost three years to the day of its suppression, the Church Brew Works triumphantly reopened the doors of St. John Church. A journey of meticulous respectful restoration had taken place, breathing new life back into a forgotten masterpiece. Every brick, every beam, and every fixture were handled with care, mirroring the dedication put into the church’s original construction. This restoration wasn’t just about reviving a building; it was about honoring the past while embracing the future.

The attention to detail throughout the renovation process is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Take, for instance, the original pews that were once handcrafted for worshipers. These pews, originally measuring 24 feet, were skillfully transformed into 54-inch “mini pews.” This deliberate modification allowed for seamless entry, making it easier for patrons to immerse themselves in the surroundings. Notably, the oak planks salvaged from these pews found new life as the bar, anchoring the space with a tangible link to the past.

As you wander through the brewery, you’ll notice the reddish-orange hue of the flooring—a direct homage to the church’s original Douglas Fir floors. These floors, having languished beneath plywood for half a century, were resurrected and meticulously restored, breathing warmth and character into the space. The centerpiece of the church, the altar, paved the way for an extraordinary sight—the brew house on the Apse. Steel and copper tanks glisten against a celestial blue backdrop, creating an enchanting visual that perfectly complements the quality of the beer brewed within.

Speaking of the beer, Church Brew Works offers a selection that’s as diverse as the city itself. Four exceptional handcrafted brews steal the show: the North German Style Pilsner, the Bavarian Dunkel, the British Special Bitter, and the ever-rotating Blast Furnace Stout. Each sip tells a story of brewing mastery, a fusion of tradition and innovation that’s meant to delight even the most discerning palate.

Yet, Church Brew Works doesn’t stop at crafting exceptional brews; it extends its artistry to the culinary realm as well. The menu that mirrors the diversity of Pittsburgh. From hearty classics such as the Polish Pierogi–dough wrapped around a potato filling–to innovative creations, there’s a dish for every explorer to savor and enjoy. The church that once stood silent now resounds with laughter, conversation, and the clinking of glasses—a symbol of transformation, revival, and the enduring spirit of Pittsburgh.

Give Your Sweetheart A Sweet Treat: Their Own Candy Bar

In the middle of Pennsylvania farmland and Amish country is a factory emitting the sweet aroma of chocolate. The town of Hershey is known as Chocolatetown, USA. Right smack dab in the center of town is Hershey’s Chocolate World, a visitor center immersing you in all things chocolate, as in all things Hershey.

    Entrance

Chocolate wonks, or “Wonkas”, rejoice! Milton Hershey’s famed chocolate company opened in 1900. An entire community developed around the factory that produces the iconic Hershey’s Chocolate Bar and other confections.

Still, the Hershey Bar is king here, and you get to see the process of making one up close. Not just any chocolate bar, but one reflecting your personality, where you choose the ingredients and design your own chocolate wrapper. The Create Your Own Candy Bar experience is $26.95 per person, free for children under age 2. It’s fun, interactive, entertaining, and, of course, sweet tasting. The final product comes in a keepsake tin box with personalized wrapper. Your bar is thicker and bigger than the traditional Hershey Bar sold in stores.

    Follow The Production Line

The journey begins at the entrance where you put on a sanitary apron, hair net, and face mask. Then you proceed to a computer screen. Type your name and choose your bar, milk or dark chocolate. Plus, add any two of seven choices of ingredients. I chose dark with pretzel bits and sprinkles. Or, you can go with a chocolate-only bar, but what fun would that be? Then follow your bar on the production line through every step of creation. The entire experience takes about 45-minutes. However, if you spend too much time at a second computer kiosk to design your bar’s wrapper, you can miss the final stages of production. There are so many design choices and layouts to choose from!

I ate my chocolate bar, but I can see making another to give as a gift to a special person with their favorite ingredients. That would be cool. In fact, you can order personalized chocolate bars from Hershey if you can’t make it to any of the Chocolate World locations. If you do go to the Hershey location for Create Your Own Candy Bar, an advanced reservation is required. There are a limited number of spaces available every day.
