Sitting on a closely mowed green fairway just off the beach on Seabrook Island, SC, the party is underway. People dance to the music of a live rock band or gather in small groups on lawn chairs, drinking, eating, and playing cornhole. As the sun sets, the scene feels like a joyful prelude to the main event: fireworks.
Fourth of July fireworks are an annual tradition here—just like everywhere else—but the Big Bang celebration comes a day early. It’s kind of like celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve.
There’s a shared joy in our common purpose: freedom, independence, and patriotism. No hint—none whatsoever—of the political divide that so often grips America.
As the first boom echoes and the sky bursts with colorful plumes, the crowd erupts in oohs, ahhs, and cheers. And it stays that way until the grand finale 25 minutes later.
People head home happy, content, and, for a while, united.
I’m constantly in awe of sky gazing. The sun, moon, clouds, and stars are a giant gallery with wonderful, mesmerizing works of art. Art that’s constantly in motion. I’m always seeking to capture and preserve it in the various places I travel. I’m currently in the South Carolina Lowcountry, specifically Seabrook Island near Charleston. I attached my GoPro Hero camera to a dock overlooking the marshes of the Stono River and focused on the sky. With the camera set in nightlapse mode, my goal was to capture sunset to sunrise with as little light pollution as possible. The sky did not disappoint! Enjoy!
Summer on the southern salt marsh of the South Carolina Lowcountry is a symphony for the senses. The pluff mud at low tide crackles with the sounds of tiny snapping shrimp. The air is filled with the aroma of decomposing marsh organisms, which can be either foul or sweet, depending on your mood or makeup. Visually, the landscape flows freely like a painter’s brush coloring a canvas in vivid shades of blue, green, and brown. Various species of shorebirds gracefully wing through the sky or pose like statues in the mud-brown water. Shrimp boats are docked in the distance after bringing in the day’s haul. The marsh grass gently sways from side to side in a light breeze, making you forget—for just a moment—the heat from a July sun.

I am standing on a dock about a quarter of a mile into the salt marsh from dry land on Seabrook Island, just south of Charleston. It’s soothingly quiet, except for the snapping shrimp and the occasional whirring engine of a motorboat off in the distance. Big, puffy clouds stretch across the sky like giant cotton balls, a perfect scene to capture in a time-lapse video to expose their animated movement in the atmosphere. I’m filled with gratitude and peace in this pristine environment.

With light traffic and a 25 mph speed limit, it’s one of the most bike-friendly places you’ll ever experience. Paved trails and streets wind through the island, many canopied by majestic oak trees, offering both shade and beauty. Gentle hills and slopes add a touch of excitement and a stimulating workout to your ride.
Seabrook Island is a haven for wildlife. The island’s untouched natural landscapes make it a refuge for creatures big and small. You’ll spot wild turkeys and deer, seemingly undisturbed by your presence. The island’s numerous lagoons and ponds are teeming with life, attracting a variety of waterfowl, including majestic egrets and pelicans that glide gracefully above.
The highlight of my journey may well be the tranquil salt marshes, especially during the golden hour. Bathed in the soft, warm light of late afternoon, these marshes become nature’s own gallery of landscape paintings. The expansive views of the marshes, with their winding waterways and lush vegetation, create a sense of serenity that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Seabrook Island’s beaches are mesmerizing. As you approach the coast, the shimmering sea reveals itself. Here, you’ll find wide stretches of sand dotted with giant white pampas grass plumes that sway gracefully in the sea breeze. It’s a scene straight out of a postcard, where the endless horizon is framed by the dance of these glorious plumes.
