Living in Florida, it’s not unusual to encounter dolphins in the wild. Happens all the time. Dolphins swim and jump in boat wakes, feed close to the beaches, and glide along seawalls. But in all my 40 years living here, I’ve never, ever, had an encounter like this. What this family experienced is absolutely incredible. These creatures are so highly intelligent and playful and attracted to humans. No wonder this Instagram video has gone viral. It also serves as a reminder to protect our natural habitats and the environment around us so these marine mammals and others can thrive and survive.

Florida never ceases to amaze. I’d like to call this a rare occurrence, but lately, it feels like I’m stumbling upon dolphins more frequently at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor. It’s during the so-called “Golden Hour”, as dusk begins to settle and the tide rises, that dolphins congregate along the seawall for their feeding frenzy.
Whether you’re a local or a tourist, this experience is truly worth your time—a guaranteed “WOW” moment.

How A Curious Dolphin Made My Walk By The Water In The Park Unforgettable
It was a quiet morning for a walk at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor, Florida. The spring break crowds were gone. Nearing the end of a two mile walk in this oak-canopied park by the water, I spotted a dolphin’s fin above the surface less than 100 yards from the sea wall. The dolphin disappeared, then reappeared, most likely feeding on a buffet of fish in Tampa Bay. I stopped at the edge of the sea wall to watch and shoot some video with my iPhone. I don’t know if this dolphin sensed it was having a “star” moment, or if it was pure serendipity, but he suddenly swam by me and flashed that unmistakable dolphin smile as he glided just below the surface and then disappeared. It was like he was saying hi and have a great day. How could I not after having this unexpected encounter?
