One of the most romantic experiences on the planet is slowly cruising the narrow canals of ancient Venice, soaking in the spectacular atmosphere of everyday life, historic buildings, and monuments along the way. Gondoliers in their distinctive garb are abundant and ready to escort you on this expensive, yet quintessential journey—one you simply have to experience. Imagine telling your friends back home about visiting Venice and having them ask how you liked the gondola ride. Gondolas are synonymous with Venice; you can’t picture one without the other. The gondoliers know this, so don’t bother trying to negotiate a price. I tried, of course, hoping to nudge the cost down, but I was met with a pleasant smile and a gentle “no.” So, for €200, we booked a 45-minute gondola tour from the Grand Canal. Expensive, yes, but worth every cent for this iconic journey.

The musicians in St. Mark’s Square are more than mere background ambiance in this bustling tourist spot. These accomplished artists perform throughout the day and evening on raised stages at various outdoor cafés. You can sit, relax, listen, sip your favorite cocktail, and maybe even order a meal. It’s a delightful way to spend an afternoon or evening in this remarkable Italian city.
