REGENSBURG, GERMANY
(Bavaria- Mellow Wanderer) Historic Regensburg, Germany is in the heart of Bavaria on the banks of the Danube River. Choose your adjective: quaint, charming, bucolic. They all fit this city and the surrounding countryside like a perfect pair of lederhosen.
Stroll through the cobblestone and brick paved streets, narrow alleys, and wide open squares. Soft pastel colors make the surrounding tall buildings pop.
Old Town Regensburg’s medieval Stone Bridge is 850 years old, spans the Danube and is the city’s most famous landmark with remarkable views. Regensburg is a UNESCO World Heritage site, chock-full of original Roman and Gothic buildings and churches, preserved over time with a commitment to authenticity. St. Peter’s Cathedral, the Dom, dominates the skyline. A must see. Inside, a spacious crypt at the bottom of a stairwell entombs numerous bishops from centuries past. In stark contrast to the Gothic Dom is the Alte Kapelle church. The exterior is understated, but once you pass through the doorway, there’s a brilliant interior basilica adorned with white and gold figurines and statues and breathtaking murals.
A vibrant social scene emerges in the public squares and shopping districts. Pedestrians, bicyclists, scooters and cars maneuver around each other with the graciousness of a good neighbor.
Locals and tourists can kick-back, relax, sip cappuccino, swig a beer and read a book, or savor a meal at a variety of sidewalk cafes and restaurants.
Regensburg is a wanderer’s playground, full of interesting and intriguing historical sites, people and cityscapes. Click on the videos below for a sample of the sights you’ll see on a walking tour and enjoy some local traditional Oktoberfest Bavarian music. Auf Wiedersehen!
