(Dunedin, FL-Mellow Wanderer) Old world charm nestled among swaying palms and cool St. Joseph Sound breezes make waterfront Dunedin feel more like a village than a city.
Bicycles outnumber cars. Though more foot traffic than anything else could flatten a flip-flop or two. Founded by settlers from Scotland, Dunedin, the original name of Edinburgh, grew from its origins as a railroad town to a thriving family tourist attraction.
During the height of the spring tourist season, the city embraces its Scottish heritage with the Dunedin Highlands Games and Festival. Bagpipes, dancers, kilts, and forever plaid!
Dunedin’s also the spring home of Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays and has been since 1978. Seems this town is steeped in tradition. Baseball fans from Canada and tourists alike love it here.
The attractive European feel of the downtown shopping district appeals to casual walkers, and draws bicyclists and hikers from the nearby and popular Pinellas Trail. Another slice of paradise is Honeymoon Island State Park, where you can stroll along one of the most undeveloped beaches in Florida, or for a small fee hop aboard a ferry and go to the even more isolated Caladesi Island, which was voted America’s Best Beach in 2008.
Restaurants and shops, festivals, parks, boating, and fishing make Dunedin the perfect spot for a relaxing family outing or vacation.
