My early spring stroll through the Florida Botanical Gardens is filled with wonder and beauty. (Watch the video for vibrant blooms! 🌺) It’s the perfect time of year when the seasonal change from winter brings new growth and sensational blooms in varied color spectrums.
But even more amazing in this paradise tucked off the beaten tourist path of Pinellas County in Largo, Florida, is that the gardens are free. There is no admission charge, and parking is also free. This is a place where people can come to recharge, refresh, and decompress from life’s stress, regardless of whether they’re rich, poor, or somewhere in between. It speaks to the county leaders’ commitment to a high quality of life, where every public park is free. A standard Pinellas’ neighbor, Hillsborough County, should strive to match. In Hillsborough, every large public park requires payment for entry and parking.
The Florida Botanical Gardens span 150 acres of formal gardens, scenic landscapes, and native habitats. There’s even a dedicated 2-acre garden just for kids. Adjacent to the gardens is the walkable Florida Heritage Village, a 21-acre living history museum surrounded by natural pine and palmetto. The region’s history is showcased through attractions such as historic homes, a boathouse, a sponge warehouse, a general store, a railroad depot, schools, and a church. The gardens and heritage village make for a wonderful family excursion that won’t cost you anything—a deal you can’t beat.
