One of the pure pleasures of living in a warm climate is enjoying a variety of tropical plants. My absolute favorite is the pine cone ginger, also known as the shampoo ginger for its soapy liquid content. This is a magnificent plant for a number of reasons. It’s easy to grow. Just place bulbs in the ground, cover them up, and they’ll pop up with bright, showy red bracts every summer. At the end of the growing season in autumn, just before they go dormant in winter, the bracts can be harvested and the liquid extracted to use as shampoo. I prefer to use shampoo ginger as a skin softener, and it’s wonderful. Play the video for my step-by-step process on how to capture the all-natural goodness of this perennial plant
